Last week (September 27-28) was our annual Symposium in Winston-Salem. As you know, we partnered with IIANC’s InsurEXPO2022. Between our two associations, there were over 700 in attendance. NCAHU had our break-out sessions and participated in IIANC’s general sessions. It was a great meeting!
On Tuesday afternoon, the keynote speaker was Coach Roy Williams. Now, I will admit that even though our youngest son went to NC State, I was excited to hear Coach Williams!
What a fantastic career he has had! He has not only impacted the lives of hundreds of young men over his illustrious career, but he was asked to speak to the US Team before the start of the President’s Cup held in Charlotte a couple of weekends ago. (That’s the best of the best in professional Golf). He said he was humbled and honored to do so.
He said he spoke about leadership and the importance of being a good leader. Your words and actions can affect someone in ways you may never know. That’s a heavy load to carry. Coach Williams had and still has a profound effect on the players he used to coach, young boys who attended his basketball camps, and students who attended UNC while he was there. After his presentation, he asked if anyone had a question for him. An attendee in the audience said he didn’t have a question – he just wanted to say “Thank you”! He thanked Coach Williams for what he had done for the school, the game of college basketball, the ‘gentle-man’ he was to his players and staff, and for being a man of faith. All qualities of a great leader!
We are all leaders in our own way. Maybe it’s coaching your child’s soccer or baseball team or helping other agents in your office maneuver their way through the “dreadful 4th quarter”. You could even be serving on your local board. There are so many ways we lead – just being a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle – that’s leading! Having a positive influence over another – hoping you helped them be better than when you met them! I hope to do that!
I’ll leave you with a few quotes from Coach Williams:
“Play hard, play smart, play together!”
“It’s amazing how much you can accomplish when it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.”
And here’s my favorite – “You are led by your dreams, not pushed by your problems!”
Thank you to all the leaders out there! You are making an impact.
